Australian funding routes and who applies

Scheme membership and application eligibility are separate. Universities or eligible businesses lead many applications; an individual doctoral student cannot apply directly to every programme. Dates below were checked on 30 September 2026. Confirm the current call and your institution’s earlier internal deadline.

PhD-qualified researcher must have citizenship or residency for duration, reside/work in Queensland, be employed/paid at least 0.5 FTE and spend at least 0.5 FTE on fellowship; industry collaboration. Australia’s Economic Accelerator: Ignite and InnovatePreviously eligible university-led research translation projects; industry alignment and round-specific conditions; not individual/student grants.Previously proof-of-concept/proof-of-scale spectral products.No funding for new projects beyond 2025–26, under 2026–27 Budget. A practical route from question to proposal

  1. Join EOA; follow Queensland IEEE GRSS joint chapter and ISPRS; choose TERN, DEA/NSD or NVCL by application.
  2. Prepare a one-page research concept with decision/problem, spectral necessity, target/data access, validation, end user, deliverables and budget.
  3. Ask a Griffith academic lead and university research support team to check institutional/investigator eligibility, contributions and internal deadlines.
  4. For grain work assess current GRDC PoC before 14 October, or separately the PhD scholarship before 13 October; otherwise plan scientific ARC or sector procurement route.
  5. Treat Kick-Start/CRC-P as business-led routes; monitor next announced Queensland round; exclude AEA from new-project funding shortlist.

Define the sensing question, the end user and validation evidence before choosing a funding route. The plausible HSI applications in this guide are not promises of funding, eligibility or successful awards.
